The Samaritans of Cape Cod and the Islands

Volunteering

What is necessary to become a volunteer at The Samaritans on Cape Cod and the Islands?

Compassion, understanding, and a willingness to listen.

Are All Callers Suicidal?

No; most of our callers are not on the brink of suicide. A volunteer can make a difference, can help prevent a caller from reaching that point. Our callers need someone to validate their feelings, to be there to listen to their concerns and fears.

Isn’t It Depressing?

Just the opposite. Not only do volunteers feel grateful for their own lives - they feel a rewarding connection with those who call.

Interested in Becoming a Volunteer?

Please call our business office: (508) 548-7999. We’ll be happy to provide more information. Potential volunteers are interviewed at our Center in Falmouth by two Samaritans, and fill out a brief application form, which includes one personal reference.

The next step is attendance at several training classes, followed by phone shifts with experienced volunteers: a total of about 25 hours.

Before a new volunteer handles calls alone, he or she is fully prepared. The atmosphere is warm and supportive at all times.

Our Next Training Class will begin soon.

The Samaritans on Cape Cod and the Islands is very pleased to announce the addition of Karin Bohr as our new Director of Training. Karin has returned from out of state to establish residence, once again, in Falmouth and brings with her 23 years of volunteering experience for the Samaritan organization. Karin's training under our foundress, Monica Dickens Stratton, and her involvement and participation in Befrienders International adds an invaluable dimension to our training, and we welcome her expertise.
