Outreach
Samaritans are dedicated to educating the community about suicide. We are available for speaking engagements and presentations, giving information on prevention strategies, including ways to identify those at risk. Through community outreach, Samaritans convey a positive message:
The Samaritans recognize the importance of "getting the word out."
Often, people are unwilling to acknowledge depression or any kind of mental illness, as if it indicates weakness.
There is a great deal of stigma attached to suicide, with an accompanying reluctance to discuss it. All too often, someone who has lost a loved one must endure not only the loss, but also feelings of guilt and shame. The Samaritans are eager to bring the subject out into the open, to shine a light on the issue, and especially to bring hope to those who are desperate.
By recognizing myths about suicide,
and knowing how to help a suicidal person,
a life can be saved.
