"If it weren't for The Samaritans, I'd be dead now."
We Listen.
We Help.
A dramatic statement, to be sure – one that The Samaritans on Cape Cod & the Islands volunteers have heard from callers on our crisis hotlines. Our calls range from those who need to be heard and respected to those who are truly desperate.

The Samaritans are here for anyone who is lonely, depressed, or even suicidal. Volunteers are the heart and soul of The Samaritans. Like the callers, volunteers have widely differing backgrounds. Samaritans are not therapists, counselors or crisis managers. They are non-professionals who are non-judgmental and give no advice. Through listening and caring, Samaritans help to alleviate the painful feelings that may lead to suicide.
The Samaritans answer phone calls 7 days a week, every day of the year.
Callers find a unique kind of help. Samaritans offer all callers unqualified respect and support. By listening with compassion, volunteers seek to provide understanding and concern for a caller's feelings, which can be overwhelming. We call this active listening "befriending." In many cases, callers feel comfortable sharing pain that they are unable to share with anyone they know. All calls are completely confidential; callers and volunteers are anonymous.
